The first season on BU’s innovative new stage continues with a play exploring oppression & tyranny

By Jean Anouilh | Translated by Jeremy Sams | Directed by Jim Petosa
In May, Joan & Edgar Booth Theatre at Boston University wraps up its inaugural season with Jean Anouilh’s Antigone, presented by BU College of Fine Arts (CFA) School of Theatre.
French playwright Jean Anouilh’s Antigone comes from a Paris that suffered under the heel of tyranny and was inspired by Sophocles’ play of the same name and the original Greek myth. This incisive translation of the classic Greek drama was developed by noted British playwright, translator, and director Jeremy Sams. Jim Petosa directs this production of Antigone, conveying the play’s striking and provocative parallels to modern America.
“Jean Anouilh’s Antigone was written as a call to resistance during the French occupation,” says Petosa. “The play is a searing and rallying cry for justice, responsibility, and courage. The Jeremy Sams 2002 translation gives actors a compelling language to create their performances. The third and final offering of this inaugural Booth Theatre season, ANTIGONE makes use of the intimacy and the epic possibilities of our wonderful new theatre.”
The 250-seat Joan & Edgar Booth Theatre, designed by internationally-recognized Elkus | Manfredi Architects, is located at the heart of BU’s Charles River campus. The facilities of the Booth Theatre and adjoining CFA Production Center create a 21st century learning environment to educate the next generation of artists and engage audiences in an immersive experience. The purposeful, flexible design of the Booth Theatre allows for the nearly boundless evolution of performances and a deep engagement with audiences.
