Since the fall of 2014, students from the Boston University School of Visual Arts and the Roxbury Prep Lucy Stone Campus, a charter school for students 5-8thgrades located in Dorchester, have been involved in a partnership to bring visual arts into the Roxbury Prep curriculum and provide opportunities for students from both schools to engage in creative exchange. The 2015-2016 school year saw the partnership grow and develop, with a group of BU School of Visual Arts undergraduate and graduate students leading regular Friday afternoon art workshops on the Roxbury Prep campus for students in the 5th and 7th grades. In addition, the Roxbury Prep community was invited to BU campus for two events.
In March, a group of 7th and 8th graders with an interest in studying visual art at the college level visited BU on a field trip in which they participated in a monotype printmaking workshop led by CFA student Julianna Katz and staff member Josh Brennan, followed by a tour of the School of Visual Arts and lunch at West Campus.
In April, a multi-generational group of Roxbury Prep families participated in a Saturday drawing workshop led by CFA faculty member Hugh O’Donnell and students Taylor Mortell and Abigail Frank. A selection of work from this workshop has been installed at the Roxbury Innovation Center, a community maker space located in the Bolling building in Roxbury’s Dudley Square.
