For Black History month, CFA remembers School of Visual Arts Professor Emeritus John Wilson (1922-2015).
Though Wilson is probably best known for an iconic bust of Martin Luther King Wilson displayed in the Capitol rotunda, this painter, printmaker, and sculptor was also known as a passionate educator whose work was informed and illuminated by African American experience and the Civil Rights Movement.
Here for the first time, we share John Wilson’s interview with his Visual Arts colleague Karl Fortess (1907-1993). In this interview, Wilson not only gives us a glimpse into his process, but insight into his experience as an African American artist.
